Stephane Sarrazin to join Oreca in LMS

Oreca announced today that Stephane Sarrazin will be joining the team for the remainder of the Le Mans Series season. Sarrazin will share the seat of Oreca’s Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with Olivier Panis and Nicolas Lapierre.

Sarrazin is currently second in the Le Mans Series drivers classification, following McNish and Capello who share the first place. The teams classification is currently lead by Audi Sport Team Joest followed by Rebellion and Aston Martin Racing.

Nigel Mansell Recovering Well After Le Mans Accident

Nigel Mansell of Beechdean Mansell Motorsport is recovering well after his severe crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. The team’s Ginetta Zytek prototype was badly damaged and requires extensive repairs which will cause the team to miss the next Le Mans Series race in Portugal, mid July.

Beechdean Mansell Motorsport will be back on track at Hungaroring with Nigel’s sons in the driving seat. Nigel will drive again at Silverstone in front of his fans.

Next Audi LMP1 prototype to be closed top

Audi Sport boss Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich hinted that the prototype Audi will build for next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, the R18, will probably be a closed top. Up until this year Audi had a dilemma. Closed top prototypes are more efficient because of their superior aerodynamics but open prototypes can be more efficiently handled and so gain time during pit stops.

Starting next year, however, the ACO has introduced new sporting rules that cancel out the pit stop handling advantages of open top prototypes, so they will most likely build and race a closed top.

Sebastien Loeb might race at Le Mans in 2011, or not

A local Le Mans radio station aired parts of an interview with Sebastien Loeb they have recorded during the 24 Hours race this past weekend inside the Peugeot pit box. Loeb said he was thinking about joining Peugeot for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2011 but only if there was a good opportunity, whatever that means. He said he’s not especially keen for it, if he really wanted to race at Le Mans he could have done so this year too, but he didn’t want to. But if he can help next year, he just might…

Loeb, who has won the WRC with Citroen so many times I can’t remember, participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice in the past, when he raced for Pescarolo Sport. He also tested with the Peugeot 908 this spring during the LMS tests at Le Castellet which raised speculations about his possible involvement with the Peugeot Le Mans team.

Spyker Squadron have released their own 24 Hours of Le Mans 2010 six hours race report along with a nice video.

24 Hours of Le Mans 2010 Seven Hours Report

Almost seven hours after the race started the remaining three Peugeot 908s are leading the pack. The Peugeot no 3 driven by Pedro Lamy abandoned in the early hours of the race. Sebastien Bourdais who qualified the car to pole position never got a chance to drive.

So in LMP1 the two factory Peugeot are leading followed by Oreca’s 908, currently driven by Olivier Panis. In fourth and fifth position we have two Audi R15s which are slighly slower than the factory Peugeots but slightly faster than Panis but also one lap behind him.

In LMP2 Highcroft Racing and Strakka Racing are leading their category with their HPD ARX.01 followed by Oak Racing’s Pescarolo Judd.

In GT1 Matech’s Ford GT driven by Romain Grosjean is doing extremely well, followed by one of Luc Alphand’s GT1 Corvette C6.R and the Saleen S7R of Larbre Competition.

In GT2, guess what, remember that Risi Competizione’s Ferrari had its qualifying times cancelled and had to start the race from the back of the grid? Well, that Ferrari is back to the front leading its category in front of the two factory Corvettes. Isn’t that great?

Risi Competizione Disqualified

Risi Competizione was disqualified today following a surprise check of the car last night by ACO officials. The check revealed some irregularities on the rear wing the Ferrari no. 82. Risi Sompetizione’s qualifying times were cancelled and the car will start the race from the back of the grid. This change places the two corvettes in in front of the GT2 grid.

Peugeot and Bourdais confirm pole position

The four Peugeot 908 HDi FAP from Peugeot Sport and Oreca have secured the first four position on the starting grid of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2010, with Sebastian Bourdais being the fastest man around the the track at 3′19.711. The three Audi R15+ took the following three positions followed by Aston Martin Racing.

In LMP2, the first thee positions go to Strakka, Highcroft and RML. In GT1 the Aston Martin DBR9 of Young Driver AMR took the first position in its class, folowed by two Ford GTs and Luc Alphand’s GT1 corvettes.

The fastest car in GT2 was Risi Competitione’s Ferrari followed by the two factory GT2 Corvettes.
